Terminology

First let’s define how the part numbers are created.

Instrument Class -- Defines the class of instruments the tool / template is designed to support. The word "class" is used here because the overall shape is oversized beyond the reference shape by +.25" to account for small discrepancies with builders existing shapes. If the builders shape is beyond the .25" tolerance a new custom template will be needed.

Example classes -- Dreadnought style shape is Dred Class or DC, Orchestra Model style shape is OM Class or OMC, etc...


Workboards

Universal Radiused Workboard

  • Part number = SMF-U-WB[Radius] (ex. SMF-U-WB15)

  • Description - SMF Workboard available in various radii. The SMF upper index holes are drilled into the board and the lower slots are cut extended. This enables shapes using both the small body and large body class to use a single workboard to accommodate both large body and small body kits. Note: Workboard is also available flat.


3D Printed Components

Body Mold Integration Spacer

  • Part number = SMF-3D-IS

  • Description -- Spacer used when integrating the SMF index holes into a shop built or third-party outside mold (ex: StewMac Body Mold). The spacer is pinched between the two halves of the outside mold to create a keyway for the drill baseplate to slide on. The spacer is marked with an arrow to help the user know which half of the mold is to be drilled.


Plate Alignment Spacer

  • Part number = SMF-3D-PAS

  • Description -- Spacer used to align joined plates on the centerline for drilling with the drill baseplate. This integrates the plate into the SMF build system.

Drill Bushing Washer

  • Part number = SMF-3D-DBW

  • Description -- Washer placed beneath the drill bushing before being installed into the drill baseplate. The washer raises the drill bushing slightly so that it is not protruding below the acrylic of the baseplate. This is needed because .25" acrylic stock is often .235" - .245" rather than truly .25"

Knurled Pins

  • Part number = SMF-3D-KP-[Size] (S, M, L, XL)

  • Description -- 3D printed pins with knurled knobs. The pins are printed in varying lengths designated by S (.5"), M (.75"), L (1"), XL (1.25"). The pins are used to align templates to plates, workboards, dishes and outside molds. The pins are also used to hang the templates in the storage unit.

Printed Risers

  • Part number = SMF-3D-PR-[Size] (S,M,L,XL)

  • Description -- 3D printed riser blocks to use with outside molds to bring the alignment pin holes & slots closer to the plate and templates. The risers are printed in varying heights to accommodate many different outside mold thicknesses. The heights are designated by S (.5"), M (.75"), L (1"), XL (1.5").

Brace Trimming Template

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-BTT

  • Description -- Template used to put the correct angles on the brace ends of supporting braces (finger braces, toneboars, etc...) and for cutting the lap joint on the X-brace. The template is specific to the class or model of instrument it was created for.

Storage Unit

  • Part number = SMF-3D-SU

  • Description -- Storage unit for SMF templates. The storage solution consists of two pieces, an upper piece referred to as the storage cap, and a lower piece referred to as the storage base. Collectively they are the storage unit. Both the storage cap and storage base have slots where a plate is inserted in order to lock the templates into place so they cannot accidentally fall out. The storage cap has an additional slot on the front where a badge plate can be inserted. The badge plate has the SMF logo and optionally the model number of the templates stored in it.

Front Badge Plate

  • Part number = SMF-3D-FBP

  • Description - 3D printed plate that slides into the front slot of the storage cap. The badge has the SMF logo and optionally the model of the templates being stored (ex: DC, OMC, L00C).

Drill Guides

Drill Baseplate

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-BP (ex. SMF-DC-BP)

  • Description -- Baseplate populated with drill bushings to enable drilling of locating holes into top and back plates, drilling the center of the soundhole for rosette making, drilling locating holes into outside body molds, and more.

Templates

Side Template

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-ST (ex. SMF-DC-ST)

  • Description -- Template that represents the side profile for a given shape. The default side template is based on a 15' back radius and 30' soundboard radius. Custom radius templates are available.

    Note: This template is cut from .060" PTEG plastic and is intended for tracing only

Plate Tracing Template

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-PTT-[Tabs] (ex. SMF-DC-PTT-NS)

  • Description -- Template that represents a .25" oversized master shape outline with tabs integrated on opposite sides of the centerline. This is the template used to trace the back and soundboard plate after drilling with the Drill Baseplate. There are two tab options, NS (north / south) & EW (east / west).

Reinforcement Strip Guide

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-RSG (ex. SMF-DC-RSG)

  • Description -- Guide for installing the reinforcement strip on the back plate. The guide has engraved locations for the back braces, neck and tail blocks to allow for installing individual reinforcement strip in segments.

Reinforcement Routing Template

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-RRT (ex. SMF-DC-RRT)

  • Description -- Template that allows the reinforcement strip to be routed in specific sections to allow the back braces to be glued in. This template must match the bracing layout defined in the Back Bracing Halo

Back Bracing Halo

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-BHB (ex. SMF-DC-BHB)

  • Description -- Two-piece template that aligns back braces during glueup. Using the corresponding Reinforcement Routing Template will ensure proper alignment with the slots made in the reinforcement strip.

Lining Routing Template -- Back

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-LRT-B (ex. SMF-DC-LRT-B)

  • Description -- Template that allows the lining to be notched to accept the back braces.

Soundboard Bracing Halo

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-BHS (ex. SMF-DC-BHS)

  • Description -- Two-piece template that aligns the soundboard braces during glue-up.

Lining Routing Template -- Soundboard

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-LRT-S (ex. SMF-DC-LRT-S)

  • Description - Template that allows the lining to be notched to accept the soundboard braces. Depending on the bracing configuration this may only let in the upper soundboard braces or both upper and lower.

Plate Gluing Template

  • Part number = SMF-[Class]-PGT (ex. SMF-DC-PGT)

  • Description -- Template that is used as a clamping caul when gluing on the back or soundboard to allow go-bars to be used.
